Chapter 3Propagation
Why tissue culture
Tissue culture, also called micropropagation, grows new plants from a tiny piece of a parent plant in a sterile, nutrient-rich gel. Because every plantlet comes from the same mother tree, each one carries the same genetics.
- True to type. Uniform growth and form across the whole planting.
- Clean start. Plants begin free of soil pests and pathogens, and each lot is screened before release.
- Faster establishment. Vigorous, well-rooted, hardened plants that establish quickly when planted and cared for properly.
- Scale. Production does not depend on seed years or stock-tree size.
